Since 1998, the banking at Honda’s Twin Ring Motegi circuit has contained open-wheel race cars for CART/IRL annual visit. This year, the banking was literally a parking lot as the race cars took to the track’s smooth, ribbon road course. Those parked cars belonged to the good crowd that filled most of the front straight stands.
Fans in the paddock enthusiastically chased down drivers for autographs, Danica Patrick almost disappearing in the scrum. Those in the stands were quite vocal, cheering Takuma Sato and standing to applaud Scott Dixon’s win.
And the fans love to dress for the occasion…we particularly like this hat.
Scott Dixon took the lead from the start and though pressured by Will Power never faltered. Here Dixon is emerging from one of the tunnels that are part of the track. Dario Franchitti lost his IndyCar title lead to Power, making contact at one point and being sent to the back of the field, though recovering to 8th place.
Marco Andretti soldiered through for a solid third place at the checkered flag.
