The cause of many an argument. Who is best at parking men or women?
Statistics released by the UK’s Driving Standards Authority, which oversees driving tests, seem to suggest that women do indeed find it more difficult to park their car.
Some 1.6 million driving tests are taken each year with men making 718,244 errors sufficiently bad enough to fail while the same figure for women was 941,962; the sum of these is greater than the actual number of tests as candidates made more than one mistake.
When it came to reverse parking 18,798 men failed, while just under half of the 40,863 women who attempted this task failed.
Estimates suggest that it takes a man 36 hours of teaching to learn to drive against the average women’s 52.
However…a report based on covert surveillance of car parks suggested that while women took longer to park, they were neater and more likely to place the car in the middle of the space.
