Barrett-Jackson Selling a 2013 Shelby GT500

Barrett-Jackson Selling a 2013 Shelby GT500:

Barrett-Jackson Selling a 2013 Shelby GT500

According to a Ford-specialist website, the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona January 15-22 will also feature the sale of a 2013 Ford Shelby GT500.

This is in addition to the five vintage Shelbys already announced for the BJ Scottsdale auction. Those cars span 1965 to 1969 model years, while the 2013 GT500 is obviously a new car. In fact, it is a very new car, as the 2013 Shelby is a major update to the GT500 line and it is likely to be the first sale of a 2013 Shelby anywhere. A high-boost 5.8-liter V-8 is the main attraction at 650 bhp, but Ford insiders say the 2013 Shelbys also offer a heavily revised chassis with excellent handling.

There’s nothing new about Ford selling the first GT500 at a Barrett-Jackson auction. In 2006 Ford sold their first Ford GT exotic at Barrett-Jackson. In 2007 it was the first Shelby GT500 to cross the auction block, followed in 2008 by the 2008 Shelby GT500KR and in 2009 by the first retail Shelby GT500 and two Mustang GT concept cars.

2012 Dakar Rally Starts on Sunday

2012 Dakar Rally Starts on Sunday:

2012 Dakar Rally Starts on Sunday

The 34th edition of the Dakar Rally, which is regarded as the toughest auto racing event in the world, starts in Mar Del Plata, Argentina on Sunday, January 1, 2012. This year the event covers 5,000 miles through Argentina, Chile and Peru. It will finish in Lima on January 15, instead of returning to Argentina as it has the past three years.

As we reported a few weeks ago last year’s winner, Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar, has teamed up with Robby Gordon to drive a second Hummer in 2012. In many ways this gives Gordon a greater chance than ever to capture the victory he has long relished.

While Americans and Middle Easterners will be cheering on the Hummer duo, Europeans will undoubtedly be rooting for the Monster Energy Rally-X team of five Mini All4 Racings and three BMW X3CCs. Two of the Minis are being driven by Nina Roma, a former motorcycle winner, and Stéphane Peterhansel, who has won nine times.

2012 Dakar Rally Starts on Sunday

Since Volkswagen is not competing after winning for three years in a row, the only sure outcome of this year’s event is that we will see something other than a Volkswagen Touareg or Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero on the podium for the first time since 2000.

Other American competitors to follow include Mark McMillin/Gary Arnold in a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Darren Skilton/Skyler Gambrell in a Baja Automotive Revolution 6 and Robb Rill/Benjamin Slocum in a Desert Warrior. It’s also worth keeping an eye on the Mexican team of Joaquin De Uriarte/Ivan Klein who are driving the Ford Raptor that Sue Mead/Darren Skilton drove in 2011 to a class win. Famous Baja motorcycle racer Johnny Campbell is co-driving for Robby Gordon, while Gordon’s former co-driver Andy Grider is co-driving for Argentinean Orlando Terranova in a Toyota.

A daily summary of the Dakar Rally will be shown at the ungodly hour of 1.30 am EST (or 10.30 pm PST) each night on NBC Sports, which is the new name for the Versus Channel, from January 2. However, if you would like to keep track in real time check out the Dakar Rally website, the blog on Robby Gordon’s Speed Energy website, or that of Toyo Tires, his tire sponsor.

Interesting Automotive Statistic of the Day

Interesting Automotive Statistic of the Day:

Interesting Automotive Statistic of the Day

Just learned from Volkswagen today that its global workforce reached 500,000 people in 2011, an increase of 100,000 compared to 2010. That’s a lot of people. The increase, says VW, is attributable to the integration of some new companies, plus the creation of 28,000 new jobs throughout the world. Of those 28,000 new workers, 7000 are in Germany, 11,000 are in other European countries, and 10,000 are outside Europe, especially in China, India and the U.S., where the new Chattanooga plant employs about 2300 people.

Geely Heading for the UK

Geely Heading for the UK:

Geely Heading for the UK

Geely, the Chinese car maker that bought Volvo from Ford earlier this year for $1.5 billion, will start selling cars in the UK towards the end of 2012. The cars will be distributed by Manganese Bronze Holdings, manufacturers of the iconic black London taxi.

The UK will be the first major west European country to sell the Chinese-built cars.

MBH will start by importing the Geely Emgrand EC7, C/D segment sized four-door saloons and five-door hatchbacks, initially with 1.5 and 1.8 liter gasoline engine options and will carry a five-year, 100,000 mile warranty with prices starting from around $15,400.

Lotus on the Block?

Lotus on the Block?:

Lotus on the block?

We’ve been fans of Lotus since the Colin Chapman days and loved driving its cars, but often wondered about the company’s financial health.

Now Bloomberg reports that Lotus may be up for sale.

General Motors sold the small British automaker to Malaysia’s Proton Holdings in 1996. That has always seemed like an odd fit, the small sports car firm with its famous engineering talents owned by a producer of inexpensive cars. Now, Bloomberg explains, Proton may be cast off by its state-run parent. Selling Lotus might ease that problem.

Turns out Lotus hasn’t made a profit in 15 years. It has shown promise, of late, with a slate of proposed new cars. Then there are the revived racing plans in Formula 1 and IndyCar. But the Hethel, England-based automaker needs time to fulfill those expansive and expensive plans.

Lotus CEO Dany Bahar has said Lotus can make a profit in 2014, but Proton’s predicament is happening right now. And Bahar’s plan calls for Lotus to sell 6000 or more cars per year by the middle of this decade.

There are suitors out there ready to bid for Lotus, but at what price?

Stay tuned.

Kia Ray EV: Kia’s First Electric Vehicle

Kia Ray EV: Kia’s First Electric Vehicle:

Kia Ray EV: Kia's First Electric Vehicle

Kia has introduced Korea’s first electric vehicle, the new Kia Ray EV – a zero-emissions city car with a range of up to 86 miles on a single charge.

For supply exclusively to the domestic Korean market, the Kia Ray EV is a close relative of Kia’s 1.0-liter gasoline powered Ray CUV, which went on sale last month. It shares that model’s major dimensions and, in a global first for an EV manufacturer, can share the production line with conventional combustion-engine cars.

The front-wheel drive Ray EV is powered by a 50kW electric motor and a high-capacity 16.4 kWh lithium ion polymer battery pack that is engineered for a 10-year life cycle and is packaged under the rear seat and cabin floor.

Although the Ray EV weighs 412 lbs. more than the gasoline model, the electric motor’s generous torque – 123 lb.-ft. (a 77% increase) – ensures responsive performance. The EV’s acceleration is brisker than the gasoline models (0 to 62 mph in 15.9 seconds), while top speed is 81 mph. Recharging times are six hours using a 220 volt household supply and takes just 25 minutes in fast-charge mode.

The Ray EV’s automatic transmission offers the driver a choice of two modes while in ‘D’ drive. ‘E’ (or ‘eco’) mode optimizes the delivery of the motor’s torque to achieve minimum battery consumption and maximum driving range. ‘B’ (or ‘brake’) mode can be selected when driving downhill to maximize braking power.

Kia Ray EV: Kia's First Electric Vehicle

Bearing the same exterior styling as its gasoline cousin, the Kia Ray EV has four small distinguishing points. A flap in the front radiator grille covers an electricity inlet for a 220 volt supply for the slow recharge mode, another inlet (for the fast recharge mode) is fitted in the same location as the fuel flap of the regular models, special decals on each front door proclaim the ‘Zero Emissions EV’ message and super-smooth 14-inch alloy wheels improve aerodynamic performance by minimizing drag.

Inside, the Ray EV features a unique instrument cluster, displaying electric motor operation, battery status and distance to recharge. It is also equipped with the first-ever EV-specific navigation system that features a seven-inch screen and provides crucial information for EV drivers such as the nearest locations of the slow/fast recharging stations. The display shows a circular shaped area in which the model can travel with its current level of battery power, so that drivers can see which destinations are reachable without a recharge.

Currently there are 500 slow/fast recharge stations in Korea, and the government plans to increase that figure to 3,100 stations by the end of 2012.

Kia claims the Ray EV embodies numerous innovations. The electric motor achieves 93% efficiency, which is the best in its segment. The lithium ion polymer battery’s cell is optimized and highly integrated, which has enabled its weight to be reduced by 13% and its energy density to be increased by 15% compared to competitors’ systems.

The on-board charger, current inverter, high-low voltage converter and EV-specific VCU (vehicle control unit) each features advances over previous equipment.

Kia Ray EV: Kia's First Electric Vehicle

Ray EV is also equipped with a new type of regenerative braking system featuring an Active Hydraulic Booster that utilizes the electric motor, instead of the gasoline engine in the regular model, to create hydraulic pressure for the brake system. The result is consistent brake pedal force throughout a wide variety of driving conditions and the ability to harvest excess energy and use it to recharge the car’s battery.

Unlike regular gasoline vehicles, Ray EV generates no engine noise, which can be a potential problem with pedestrians being unaware of the approaching car. To prevent accidents, Kia has fitted Ray EV with a VESS (Virtual Engine Sound System). When driven at speeds below 12 mph this delivers a mixture of recorded gasoline engine noises, which are also emitted whenever the car is reversing.

Japan and the USA are already considering the introduction of a legal requirement for EVs to have a virtual engine sound, and Kia has taken the first step to commercialize this system in order to anticipate the global industry’s trend.

The Ray EV is equipped with six air-bags, and electronic stability features – VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) and HAC (Hill Assist Control, to prevent roll-back) – as standard.

During 2012, Kia is planning to manufacture 2,500 units of the Ray EV, which will be provided to government departments and public offices as part of Kia’s long-term real-world research and development program to provide environmentally friendly transport to Kia customers around the world during the next decade.

Driven: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

Driven: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8:

Driven: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

Big and brawny. That about sums up the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8. If you want a car that blends in don’t read any further. However, if you want to make a statement, this car should be on your short list.

Driven: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

Normally I’d react negatively to a car with such a giant snout but Dodge’s designers have got this one right – it’s what makes the car get noticed. I got thumbs up from older guys, middle-aged women and even kids while driving.

Driven: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

Recently there has been a lot of talk about how today’s kids are not into cars in the way that their parents were. So, what better than to have Nick, my 22-year-old son, describe the car in his own words after I let him drive it – while he was carefully watched over by his father, of course.

Driven: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

His first reaction was to the way the car looks. He liked the aggressive accents, bright red Brembo fixed calipers and the “tasteful but flashy red interior”. Naturally he immediately enjoyed the performance once behind the wheel. But in many ways it was the thrill of managing a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.8 seconds as recorded by the timer in the car’s instrument pod and seeing .74 Gs showing in the displayed screen in the center console.

Driven: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

He summed it up saying, “this car has everything you need for that road trip to Hot August Nights or any other muscle car show. All in all for what the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 is supposed to be, or at least what I think they were trying to convey, they’ve done the job well. You get the raw V-8 power you would expect in a full-size sedan that handles surprisingly well.”

Driven: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

Well there you have it. My son was enthralled by the digital information displays as much as the car’s performance and looks. I too found these Performance Pages, as Dodge calls them, fascinating. For example, I discovered the car only needs 25 horsepower to propel it at 70 mph on a flat smooth freeway with just the driver in the car. That’s partly because it’s running on just four cylinders and the transition is so smooth you’d never know apart from the shining Eco light.

Driven: 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8

Purists might complain that the 2012 Charger SRT8 has four doors, but in today’s world I would rather have a four-door sports sedan that is more practical for carrying passengers and throwing in groceries or your briefcase on the back seat. It’s hard to think of any sedan costing under $50,000 that gives you as much bang for the buck as the 2012 Charger SRT8 with its 6.4L V-8 Hemi pumping out 470 hp and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. It is a truly affordable sports sedan for everyday use as well as for those times when you want a really exhilarating ride – and I guess for today’s younger drivers, electronic gizmos are also an important element.

Exotic Cars at The Gallery in the MGM Grand Detroit

2012 Detroit Auto Show

Manufacturers of high end cars often shun exhibiting at auto shows, whether it is because of the cost or a perceived shortage of potential buyers, either way it’s a shame for visitors. Even this year’s LA Auto Show, for example, lacked displays from Ferrari and Lamborghini. This despite LA being a hot bed for buyers of exotic cars.

In 2007 the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) organizers solved this problem. Together with MGM Grand Detroit they organized a one-day event a few days before the main show opened that featured ultra-luxury and performance vehicles. This year The Gallery, as it is named, will be held at the MGM Grand Detroit on Sunday, January 8, 2012.

Exotic Cars at The Gallery in the MGM Grand Detroit

The Gallery will feature vehicles from Aston Martin, Bentley, Corvette, Falcon, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Lexus, Lincoln, Lingenfelter, Maserati, Morgan, Porsche, Range Rover and Rolls-Royce. Many of the vehicles on display at The Gallery will not be shown at the NAIAS. For example, according to the organizers, the Aston Martin One-77, Lamborghini Aventador, Rolls Royce Ghost and Jaguar XKR-S will be on display exclusively at The Gallery.

In the past this has been an invitation only event. However, in addition to the invitees, there is a limited opportunity for another 100 people to attend this year. But it’ll cost you $500 for each ticket and it must be purchased no later than Friday, January 6th from the Fulkerson Group, (248) -593-9740.

Fortunately you will get to do more than just check out some fine cars as Wolfgang Puck will prepare a special dinner for invited guests. Comcast Business Class is Presenting Sponsor of The Gallery and other sponsors include Tapper’s Diamonds & Fine Jewelry, Neiman Marcus, Blue Nectar and Grey Goose.
