Renault is launching the largest solar energy project in the automotive industry by installing solar roof panels at its French plants. In partnership with Gestamp Solar, the panels will cover an area the equivalent to 63 football fields. When complete, the French automaker says the energy provided will be equivalent to the annual energy usage by a town with a population of 15,000.
The project involves six factories in France, where solar panels will cover delivery and shipping centers and staff parking lots. Installation begins later this month, with completion scheduled for February 2012. As part of Renault’s “Drive the Change” energy-saving initiative, the company states that the solar panel project will help reduce CO2 emissions by 30,000 tons annually. Renault plans on reducing its carbon footprint by 10 percent by 2013, and a further 10 percent between 2013 and 2016.
