This past weekend over 100,000 car enthusiasts gathered at Lake Wörthersee in Austria for the 30th anniversary GTI Treffen. The VW Golf GTI was just five years old when the first GTI Treffen took place and it quickly became a Mecca for GTI enthusiasts. Nowadays it has grown enormously in size and scope and has become a favorite gathering for the Volkswagen Group to unveil exciting concepts.

Last week Audi grabbed early headlines with the outlandish Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro. However the more relevant cars on display came from Volkswagen as it unveiled the Golf R Cabriolet — a sporty variation of the recently launched 2011 Golf Cabriolet. The concept is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 270 horsepower. It was finished in red and blue paint schemes at the GTI Treffen.

The Golf GTI was originally introduced in 1976 in Europe and VW unveiled a special 35th anniversary edition at the Treffen called the Golf GTI Edition 35. In keeping with the event’s theme VW also displayed a radically customized version of the original GTI, which still looks purposeful even after all these years.

One of the most unlikely-to-go-into-production concepts came from Volkswagen’s Skoda subsidiary. The one-off Fabia vRS2000 is a four-seater roadster that is supposed to reflect Skoda’s successes with its Fabia Super 2000 rally car.

Not to be outdone Seat, Volkswagen’s Spanish car company, showed off a Seat Ibiza SC Trophy car powered by a 1.4-liter engine producing 180 horsepower.
