Many of us would argue there is no more iconic car in the world than Ferrari’s 250 GTO. Designed for the 1962 FIA season, when points were awarded to Grand Touring machines, the 250 GTO was successful from its first race, Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien won at Sebring in 1962. These days GTOs are venerated and worth about $25 million each. Today, Pebble Beach paid tribute to the great machines with a line-up that left us amazed.
The 300-bhp V-12 GTOs with their Sergio Scaglietti aluminum bodywork are a monument to not just Italian design, but also the power and durability of Maranello’s engineering. So when we saw a line-up along the bay behind the Lodge at Pebble Beach we found ourselves pausing at each car. Okay, that’s a little slavish, but what better automobile for our attention.
If you ever hear one at full speed, as we did the day before at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, you’ll start saving your pennies. Okay that’s a lot to add up to $25 million, but you have to start somewhere, eh?
