In keeping with long-established tradition, the 911, the car that defines Porsche, has stayed true to its roots of being a technologically advanced, rear-engine sports car that is instantly recognizable.
It’s called the 991 internally. To the untrained eye, this replacement for the 997 looks unchanged, save for some minor detailing around the front vents, including the prominent LED running lights, a fuel filler flap that has been moved outboard on the right front fender and rear detailing that includes new taillamps.
But place old and new next to each other and you’ll see that the new car is about 2 in. longer with a wheelbase stretched nearly 4 in. This results in shorter front and rear overhangs, but more importantly moves the rear axle 3 in. aft and positions it farther beneath the rear-mounted engine. As a result, the long migration of the rear-engine layout to a mid-engine one continues with this latest iteration.
At the other end of the car, the windshield and firewall have been pushed forward slightly, reducing the dash-to-axle ratio on the car and adding a bit more space to the passenger cabin. This results in a slightly more upright windshield, a larger greenhouse and more head room.
Beneath the rear decklid, the base car’s flat-6 has its displacement reduced from 3.6 to 3.4 liters, but at the same time output is expected to increase by about 5 bhp to 350. S models retain the 3.6-liter engine and gain 15 bhp to an even 400 horses, and these cars are distinguished by four exhaust tips as opposed to the base car’s two.
The 911 will also be equipped with a 7-speed manual derived from the twin-clutch PDK. Not only does this give the clutch-inclined an additional gear to row, but also saves money through greater economies of scale by sourcing one gear set for the car. (more)
