The i3 Concept makes its auto show debut here at Frankfurt, and this pure-electric is close to production. Unique construction and a complete focus as a pure electric vehicle—rather than being an electric variation of some gasoline-powered model—make the i3 distinct in an automotive landscape that’s beginning to accept electric cars as commonplace.

The Nissan Leaf is a perfect example. It’s out there and people are buying them. The i3 Concept looks to be a direct competitor. But the Leaf weighs 3415 lb., almost 700 lb. more than this BMW i3 Concept. Plus, the i3’s electric motor produces 170 hp—that’s 63 hp more than Nissan’s. It also powers the rear axle for better driving dynamics. It is, after all, a BMW and should drive like it.

The i3 is based on an aluminum substructure that looks like a skateboard, with a liquid-cooled roughly 22-kWh lithium-ion battery pack filling out most of the center section. Its motor is mounted slightly ahead of the rear axle’s independent suspension, meaning the i3 is a mid-motor design. A carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic passenger cell is secured to the aluminum DriveCell with resin and four large fasteners. This LifeCell, as BMW calls it, is super strong and light. Although the i3 concept has a polycarbonate roof, the prototype parts shown last July had a roof made of CFRP. Body panels of thermoplastic are hung on the structure to complete the body and give the i3 a unique look. (more)
