This new addition to the Sony line is the Sony Vaio SB Standard Model it joins the Vaio range but is very different from previous models. It is light, slim and yet it still manages to keep all of the style that we have come to enjoy from the Vaio series.
As normal Sony is pitching this laptop at the higher end of the consumer market and as such, we should expect to find some high end components inside. Fortunately, we are not disappointed with what the new Vaio SB has on offer, in fact, the only real issue is the $2,000 starting price, but what can you do!
This laptop has a familiar 13.3 inch widescreen with (16:9) TFT colour, LCD LED backlight, anti-glare coating, as well as a 1366 × 768 of pixel resolution. It also comes with a built in 0.31 mega pixel web camera with internal mono mic.
There is a choice of processor power from the Intel Core i3-2350M Processor @2.30 GHz or the quicker and more expensive Intel Core i5-2450M Processor @2.50 GHz (3.10 GHz in turbo boost) with 3 MB cache memory. There enough DDR3 SO-DIMM for 4GB but the motherboard will support up to 8 GB is required. Another choice to make will be on storage, from the 640 GB or the 750 GB SATA @5400RPM hard disk drive (HDD).
Sony have all the bases covered when it comes to networking with a 1000BASE-T / 100BASE-TX / 10BASE-T × 1 Ethernet, the IEEE 802.11 b/g/n with WPA2 support for wireless connections and there is Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR as well, which always comes in handy.
Other features on the Vaio SB are the two standard USB 2.0 ports, a single fast connecting USB 3.0 port, a handy SD card slot, memory stick duo slot, and the essential HDMI port and for security purposes, there is a fingerprint sensor. As for the size of the new Vaio SB it measures 331 mm (W) × 23.8 mm (H) × 224.5 mm (D) and weighs in at a manageable 1.76 kilos with the battery pack installed that Sony claim will offer the user up to eight hours power.
Sony has released this laptop in Japan with a starting price of around $2,000, but it will soon be available in other markets too.
