2012 Corvette ZR1 Goes Back to the ‘Ring for a Very Quick Shave

2012 Corvette ZR1 Goes Back to the ‘Ring for a Very Quick Shave: "

Carmakers make big claims about improved products all the time. For us, the proof of the pudding is in the eating (or driving), but a good stand-in is the Nürburgring lap video. While validating the upgrades it has made to the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and Z06—specifically the former’s brake-based Performance Traction Management system and new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup run-flat tires—Corvette engineer Jim Mero turned in a stunning ZR1 lap time of 7 minutes 19.63 seconds on the ‘Ring’s famous Nordschleife, more than six seconds faster than the previous best of 7:26.4 set in a 2009 ZR1 also driven by Mero.

Fortunately for us, GM got the whole thing on video. That’s a lot of time to shave off of an already impressive time, so either Mero was taking it easy back in 2008, or those upgrades have had the intended effect. (Our guess is the new, more-supportive seats may have helped a bit.) Chevy also promises lap times for the Z06 soon, and we look forward to testing them both ourselves as soon as possible.
