A diesel-powered Audi was already wowing the crowds before the green flag was even waved at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. The plug-in diesel-electric hybrid Audi e-tron Spyder was part of this year’s pre-race “vers le futur” exhibition, which features cutting-edge automotive technologies.

First seen during the 2010 Paris Auto Show, the e-tron Spyder uses a combination of front-mounted electric motors and mid-mounted 3.0-liter V-6 TDI engine to send power to all four wheels. The eco-themed powertrain delivers a maximum of 388-bhp and 479 lb-ft of torque.

This propels the 3,197 lb. roadster from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, according to Audi. Top speed is electronically limited to 155.3 mph. Of course, Audi was eager to promote the e-tron Spyder’s green credentials, including a 106.9-mpg driving average and electric-only driving range of 31 miles – though top speed in electric drive is limited to 37.2 mph before the diesel engine kicks in.

And it was Audi diesel engines that did plenty of kicking during this year’s race. Despite losing two of its works racecars in dramatic crashes, the final diesel-powered Audi R18 team car managed to cross the finish line approximately 13 seconds ahead of the chasing Peugeot 908.
