Mulsanne to Mulsanne – The Road to Le Mans: Day Two

Mulsanne to Mulsanne – The Road to Le Mans: Day Two: "

I’ve been coming to Le Mans since the early 1980s but today has got to rate as one of the most unusual and enjoyable days I’ve spent at La Sarthe.

The small town of Mulsanne laid on a splendid reception for the latest Bentley bearing its name – we enjoyed a Mayorial reception hosted by M. Ferré who waxed lyrical about the car and was obviously very proud of his town’s association with the marque. To the extent that he presented Bentley with, effectively, the freedom of the town, a medal and then made us all sign the banner welcoming Bentley to his town. The event was topped off by a civic lunch, complete with tablecloths and napkins reflecting the various interpretations as to what constitutes ‘British Racing Green’, the appearance of the victorious 2003 Bentley Le Mans winner and a pair of Blower Bentleys including one raced by the great Tim Birkin.

At this time of the year Le Mans becomes the UK’s biggest club racing event, wherever you go you end up tripping over a motley selection of British sports car old and new.

But W.O’s eight litre and the accompanying Mulsannes’ are stealing the limelight wherever we go.

With an Audi on pole this coming weekend, it promises to be a thrilling race.
