Automotive Artwork for Father’s Day 2011

Automotive Artwork for Father’s Day 2011: "

Just in time for Father’s Day, the Automotive Fine Arts Society has plenty of gift ideas for any dad who has a closet full of unworn neckties. “Automotive art is becoming much more popular,” said Ken Eberts, AFAS president. “This growing genre is not only moving into corporate boardrooms, but it’s making its way into living rooms, emphasizing that automotive lifestyle.” The art on offer runs the gamut from classic Corvettes, to the world of single-seat racing car and modern exotics.

This year, AFAS member Gary Whinn has created the painting “Rolling Back the Years,” which represents old-fashioned Americana through two Fifties-era Corvettes parked outside a drive-in. Whinn believes the setting is a reflection of why so many dads pour their heart into a cherished classic. “There’s always a time in our lives for nostalgia,” explained Whinn. “Fathers across the country drive their favorite classic cars to roll back the years and re-live those cherished memories.”

If dad happens to be a Formula One fan, there is Niles Nakaoka’s “Like A Bull Out Of Hell.” The painting is a celebration of Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel and his 2010 F1 World Championship season. And for those fathers who like to follow the Prancing Horse, Tom Fritz’ “As Cool As Ever” pays a very clever homage to Ferrari – minus the Italian automaker’s famous red paintjob. The artist recalls the challenge of painting a Ferrari after his local art supply store had run out of red paint. “My challenge was then to paint ‘Rossa Corsa’ without squeezing a worm of paint from a tube marked ‘Red’ onto my palette, and controlling the color through juxtaposition.”

This is my 5th painting based on a Savannah location and perhaps captures more than any other the feeling I get when I walk around in the city. I was delighted when faced with the opportunity to be involved with this event and I hope my painting conveys some sense of my fondness for this city and a bit of the excitement of the Challenge cars.”

Richard Pietruska

  • “Viva Veloche” is a 48” x 24” sculpture featuring a Ferrari 250 LM, a Ferrari 250 GT SWB and a Ferrari F1 combined to show the essence of these powerful and exotic Ferrari models. Each vehicle, with very distinct styling and purpose, is highly detailed and shows the winning characteristics of these sought after Ferraris.

    • “I wanted to create a sculpture that combined some of the timeless designs of Enzo Ferrari and the mystique that he created with the Ferrari brand,” explained Richard Pietruska. “I stretched the cars to capture the feeling of speed and motion as well as show some of the Ferrari heritage in racing circles. Merging the unique features of each of these race cars was the most difficult and challenging part of this sculpture.”

    • The fiberglass pieces are finely painted in bright red with a subtle gradation toward the rear of each vehicle, which gives them a kinetic quality as each car goes on its victorious ways. The sculpture continually changes dynamics as the viewer moves around the piece and discovers the subtle distortions and form changes. The sculpture is mounted on a curving surface that is covered in black leather and set on an aluminum plate that accents the curves of the black base.

Form Follows Fantasy” is covered in high gloss, black paint and is accented with a striking red nose. It is 39″ x 26″ and 84″ high. The fiberglass body is mounted on brushed stainless steel tubes in a way that suggests that the Ferrari is floating through space while the 7-foot-long stainless steel tubes reflect the car’s surface to dramatize the sensual form of this particular Testa Rossa.
