MyFord Touch

MyFord Touch

If you’re confused by Ford’s popular array of in-cockpit electronics, don’t feel alone; many customers have been too. Ford is rapidly addressing the situation; just one year after its initial introduction, Ford is releasing a new, faster, more content intensive version of MyFord Touch as part of the all-new 2013 Ford Escape.

The upgraded MyFord Touch is also being offered to approximately 250,000 existing MyFord Touch customers with Edge, Explorer and Focus models. Lincoln MKX owners are receiving the same upgrade under that brand’s MyLincoln Touch banner. The upgrade is available via a memory stick which customers can download themselves in about 45 minutes or have their Ford or Lincoln dealer do it for free.+

MyFord Touch is part of Ford’s extensive and well received in-car electronic aids. The foundation of Ford’s electronics is Synch, which offers navigation and concierge services; MyFord Touch is the touch screen interface and includes normal automotive jobs such as heating and defrosting, along with accessing the sound system, telephone and navigation functions.

Besides faster touch screen and voice response and some new functions, clarity and simplification are the main goals of the MyFord Touch upgrade. The display screen formats are redesigned to minimize clutter, type fonts are larger, commonly used icons are larger and secondary information and controls are moved to the background. Even the virtual “buttons” have been refigured with shadowing and highlighting to more strongly suggest 3D push buttons.

The new MyFord Touch look is readily visible in four of the major screen displays: Home, Climate, Entertainment and Phone, but there are new functions as well. These include interfacing with common tablets, such as Apple’s iPad, using a USB cable; support of Audible.com’s audiobook presentations; better, faster Bluetooth syncing, a Gracenote album cover art database and enhanced 3D views in the navigation database.

The new MyFord Touch is debuting on the 2013 Ford Escape, followed by the 2012 Flex and Taurus. The upgrade to existing system should be available “early next year.” A video demonstrations can be seen below.
