Hey, once a racer, always a racer.
Alessandro Zanardi, two-time IndyCar champion and former Grand Prix driver, lost both his legs in a terrible crash at Germany’s Lausitzring in 2001. Zanardi then took up sedan racing with a car adapted to his needs. After leaving that sport following the 2009 season, he took up hand bicycle racing with the intent of earning a spot on the Italian team at London’s 2012 Paralympic Games.
Having already won the handcycle class (hand-powered three-wheel cycles) in the Rome and Venice Marathons, Zanardi, 45, took on last weekend’s New York Marathon. And won, completing the event in 1 hour, 13 minutes, 58 seconds.
Our congratulations…once a champion, always a champion.
