Sony has revealed a new waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freezeproof camera, which is equipped with a 4x optical zoom lens.

The camera features a 16.2 million pixel Exmor R CMOS sensor and is capable of shooting video in full HD.

Capable of resisting water at depths of up to 5 metres, it can also sustain drops from up to 1.5metres.

On the back of the camera is a 7.5cm LCD touchscreen.

The camera is also equipped with a BIONZ processor, which Sony claims helps to reduce noise when shooting low-light images.

As well as the 4x optical zoom offered by the lens, Clear Image Zoom digitally doubles the zoom range to an effective 8x.

By Pixel Super Resolution technology is included to optimise detail and sharpness, allowing for ultra-realistic images and also boosting the resolution of high-zoom shots, according to Sony.

Tracking Focus for keeping moving subjects sharp is included, along with a series of Artistic Picture Effect modes such as Toy Camera, Pop Colour, Miniature and Watercolour.

Background Defocus allows users to create "pro style" images, with a crisp foreground subject against a blurred background.

High speed shooting at up to 10fps is also available.

Other features on board the camera include sweep panorama, 3D shooting and a sensitivity range of ISO 125-3200.

The Sony TX20 UK price is yet to be confirmed, as is the release date.
