Apple’s third generation tablet is off to a good start. Sales have been strong in the over 35 countries it is currently available in. As the month of March goes by, Apple prepares for the third round of it’s phased release of New iPad. China is one of the world’s most vibrant market and has immense growth potential. It’s no wonder that Apple wants to capture a substantial share of this market, and it has nearly succeeded. There’s more good news for Apple. The company has finally been grated regulatory approval for New iPad in China.
The New iPad was unveiled to anxious representatives of media outlets on March 7, 2012 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California. This venue has played host to launch ceremonies of both previous iPads. The New iPad announcement happens to be the first major product announcement for relatively new Apple CEO Tim Cook, who gave a brilliant keynote address.
As of now the New iPad is being officially sold in 35 countries, which includes Hong Kong but not mainland China. The response has been pretty amazing up till now. The company revealed that it sold over 3 million units during the first weekend in 10 initial launch countries. Apple is yet to reveal names of countries where they will begin selling New iPad in the near future. Nevertheless they have got their foot in the door at least in China, where the New iPad was granted regulatory approval.
IDG News Service initially reported that Wi-Fi versions of New iPad have been granted regulatory approval. 3G versions of New iPad are yet to receive the approval for a network access permit. Once that is granted as well, the whole range of iPad models will be allowed for sale in mainland China. Since these approvals and permits take some time to get granted, the grey markets in China are filled with resellers who sell latest Apple products priced with hefty premiums. The demand for these products is so high in mainland China that resellers have made plenty of money by reselling Apple products in the grey markets of China.
Apple has shown a keen interest in the Chinese market. It should not be forgotten that their products are also manufactured in China by Foxconn. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently visited Beijing and also visited the Apple Retail Store there. Rumour has it that he held meetings with China Mobile executives. For all we know, he might have just visited to check out preparations for New iPad launch in China. Last time Apple launched a product in China, iPhone 4S to be precise, riots broke outside stores in Beijing which forced the company to suspend in-store sales of it’s latest smartphone.
