2014 Cadillac ELR
When Cadillac unveiled the Converj concept car at the Detroit auto show in 2009 it received plenty of applause from those in attendance. Cadillac said the four-passenger Converj concept was intended to show how GM’s revolutionary electric propulsion technology – called Voltec – could power a luxury coupe with a typically Cadillac “no compromises” design.

At the unveiling Bob Lutz, then GM’s vice chairman of Global Product Development, said the Converj concept had production substance. “It’s a logical extension of our plan to reinvent the automobile,” he said. “It clearly shows what a Cadillac electric vehicle could look like, and clearly indicates that global luxury customers can have a car that has both strong design and electric propulsion with a total range of hundreds of anxiety-free miles.”
Not long after GM went into bankruptcy and any plans for a production version of the Converj were shelved – until now.

Cadillac has revealed that the Converj will go into production as the Cadillac ELR. It will have a modified version of the electric propulsion system found in the Chevrolet Volt. The technology enables up to 40 miles of gas- and emissions-free electric driving. When the battery’s energy is low the car seamlessly switches to an extended range mode with a four-cylinder gasoline engine acting as a generator, giving it an extended-range capability of hundreds of miles.
At this time Cadillac has not revealed any specific technical information or details of its performance, but based on previous information the ELR should have the same or, hopefully, even better performance than the Chevrolet Volt.
Pricing and timing of the ELR launch has not been announced, but we suspect it will go into production in 2013 as a 2014 model.
