September 10th marks the 50th anniversary of Phil Hill winning the first-ever Formula 1 title by a driver from the United States. And where better to begin the celebration than the Monterey Peninsula. Why? In 1950, Phil won the main event at the Pebble Beach road races in a Jaguar XK120. This win launched the career that took him to Ferrari and, 11 years later, the F1 title. That was an epic year, Phil and his rival, Count Wolfgang von Trips, duking it out up to the Italian Grand Prix.
To commemorate Phil’s title, Road & Track has a billboard in the last corner at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion…a tribute to our late friend and his historic championship.
