Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion

Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion:

Jaguar history is on display and on the track. If it’s the third weekend in August, this must be the weekend of the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion, the Pebble Beach Concours, Quail Concours, Concorso Italiano, and automotive auctions…enough iron on California’s Monterey Peninsula to cause it to lose a few feet of altitude.

Leading off are the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, where Jaguar is the featured marque. On Wednesday night, 52 of the entered Jags were assembled just past turn 3 for a group shot. Oldest of the racers at the circuit is the XK120 with which Phil Hill won the automaker’s first-ever race in the U.S. in 1950. Newest are the Silk Cut prototypes that proved effective at Le Mans.

There are also C- and D-Types, Lister-Jaguars and even a MKII racing sedan, but kings of the weekend are the E-Types. This is, of course, the 50th anniversary of the beloved sports car and they are represented by early versions with the famed inline-6 and the Trans-Am V-12 racers.

What caught our eye was a grouping of three machines, today’s Jaguar hot rod, the 550-bhp XKR-S, to its left the E-Type raced by Briggs Cunningham’s team and next over that famous XK120 Phil used to win the first main event on the Pebble Beach road course.
