After GM’s big news confirming the Chevrolet Colorado pickup for the U.S. market, how about something a little smaller? We’re talking small: 1.0-to-1.5-liter engines.
The General has announced that it’s working on a new family of tiny engines to be installed across its global portfolio. Developed in conjunction with GM’s Chinese operations, the engines will come in three- and four-cylinder versions. Like Ford’s upcoming three-cylinder engine, the new baby Ecotec motors will have modern tech baked in from the start, including items like direct injection, alternative-fuel capability, and turbocharging. The above rendering shows s no visible exhaust manifold, which means it’s likely integrated into the cylinder head.
But beyond this basic overview, though, GM isn’t giving any other details on the engines—such as maximum power or fuel-economy targets—but does confirm that production will begin “mid-decade.” Our sources tell us that at some point, although perhaps not initially, one or more engines from this family will land in U.S.-market products.
