The interior of this 1959 Porsche RSK 718 is hiding a secret in plain sight. There’s a hole in the dash to the right of the tach, ringed by a rubber grommet. It’s supposed to be there. Besides adding lightness, what purpose does it serve?
Answer: It’s an alternate location for the steering column. With a few hours of wrenching, the RSK can be converted from a center-seat car—the way it was running this weekend—to a two-seater with the wheel shifted over to the left. The two D-shaped panels on either side of the driver come out, too, opening up the cockpit. And this car is also terribly rare, even compared to the other stuff we’ve seen here: six were built, four of which survive today.
