On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. This one was tricky, because the car was an experimental concept vehicle. It was a highly publicized car, but still no one who commented recognized it as the Mercedes-Benz C-111 displayed at the 1970 Geneva auto show.

These photos are from Mercedes-Benz press materials sent to us before the car’s Geneva debut. The second in a line of C-111 concepts, it was powered by a mid-mounted, four-rotor Wankel engine that Mercedes rated at 400 hp. (The first used a three-rotor setup, while later iterations used prototype diesel and turbocharged engines.) With just 2734 pounds of fiberglass-bodied sports car to move around, the powerful Wankel could propel the C-111 to 60 in a claimed 4.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 186 mph.
