It is easy to think that the newly available U32U laptop from Asus is one of the latest ultrabook style laptops, but that is not the case. Sure, it is slim, light and is fast starting, but because it is powered by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) rather than Intel, the U32U is merely an ultraportable as if that makes any difference at all!
This laptop will start up in under two seconds and its battery has been designed to last up to fourteen days on standby and offer the user around ten hours use while away from the mains power. It has a smart aluminium cover, that helps to keep the weight down to under four pounds and so this is an ultrabook in every sense apart from the name.
The U32U has a 13.3 inch LED high definition display with a 1366 x 768 of pixel resolutions and it comes with a built in 0.3 mega pixel web camera. As mentioned earlier it is going to be powered by the AMD Brazos E-450 with 1.65 GHz and graphics are provided by the AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6320G card supporting the AMD Advanced Power Management technology.
There is 4 GB of DDR3 SDRAM but there are 2 x SODIMM Sockets making it up to 8GB available. While storage come from the 320 GB 5400 RPM hard disk drive (HDD), which is just about good enough. Networking has the normal 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet LAN, 802.11 b/g/n (@ 2.4 GHz) Wireless and there is the handy Bluetooth 3.0 built in.
Other features are the three standard USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port and a handy 3 in 1 card reader (SD, MMC and MS). This laptop measures 12.9 inches (W) x 9.2 inches (D) x 1 inch (H) and weighs in at around four pounds that is with the 8-cell battery installed that Asus claim will last for up to ten hours.
The U32U ultraportable from Asus is available now with prices starting at around $450
