Bragging rights as sales leader among the three German premium car makers is reaching fever pitch. Last week Audi and Mercedes-Benz touted their record sales results for July. However the worldwide sales crown for the month belongs to BMW, which announced record sales results today. In July BMW sold 108,721 cars worldwide, compared to 106,000 for Audi and 100,391 for Mercedes-Benz.

BMW was the leading luxury brand in the U.S. and the U.K, while Mercedes-Benz was the top-selling luxury brand in Germany. Audi easily grabbed the title in China, where it sells more cars than it does in Germany.

The highest growth in sales for BMW was for the new X3, which saw its sales double compared to last year. Demand for the 5-Series was also up by 50 percent.

In a statement, Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, said: “We have just reported the most successful July sales ever and we are well on our way to achieving our recently announced target of over 1.6 million vehicles in 2011, the best ever sales result for the BMW Group (BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce). We are clearly benefitting from a very attractive product line-up which is finding success with customers right across the globe.”

All three brands are hoping to set sales records for the year. Despite the current doom and gloom, they expect worldwide sales to continue to climb during the remainder of the year.
