Pagani’s Veyron-Fighter Arrives in North America

Pagani’s Veyron-Fighter Arrives in North America: "

Pagani Huayra P1040799-R

The Pagani Huayra made its North American debut at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, August 4th, 2011. Nestled in the suburban foothills north of Los Angeles, Art Center is world renowned for its transportation design—numerous graduates have gone on to practice at manufacturers all around the world. This veritable Hogwarts of burgeoning automotive geniuses was a most fitting setting for the debut of an Italian supercar so packed with intriguing design details.

Pronounced “why-ra”, the name of this new Pagani comes from the Andean god of wind, Huayra Tata. It’s an apt name for a vehicle that’s been carefully engineered to manipulate aero with four independent flaps—two front, two aft—and dynamic front ride-height adjustability. Featuring a carbon-titanium monocoque chassis, titanium exhaust and other lightweight composites and materials in its construction, the Huayra is said to weigh only 2970 lb. Downright feathery by today’s metrics.

Powering the new Huayra is the M158 engine from AMG. Hand-assembled specifically for Pagani, the twin-turbo V-12 from AMG produces 700 bhp and 737.6 lb.-ft. of torque, and is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Comparisons have been drawn to Pagani’s other creation, the Zonda. However, Horacio Pagani states that, other than the headlights and some suspension components, the two cars are completely different. Crash one and the parts from the other are for the most part not interchangeable. While the Zonda was never sold in the U.S., Pagani said the Huayra will go on sale domestically sometime in 2013. For the impatient with European summer homes and truckloads of money, Huayras are currently being built at the Italian factory for their November 2011 debut across the pond. All you need is a spare 825,000 euros.

If that seems like a lot, take a look at the pictures. Words don’t do Pagani’s creation justice.
