If you are a Star Wars fan (aren’t we all?), and if you are of a certain age that you saw the original in the theater (I was 10!), and if you can remember the scene on the Millennium Falcon when Chewbacca and R2-D2 were playing the 3D holographic game Dejarik (coolest special effect ever!), then you are going to love this new Toshiba Qosmio laptop. Love it!
But first, allow me to digress for a moment …
You remember the scene, right? It’s when R2-D2 had just made a good game move that upset Chewie, and C3PO felt the need to immediately defend it as legit. That’s when some of the greatest advice ever given was dispensed by Han Solo, when he said “It’s not wise to upset a Wookiee”, which was quickly followed up by C3PO’s “but sir, nobody worries about upsetting a droid!” To which Han Solo replied, “that’s ‘cuz a droid don’t pull people’s arms out of their sockets when they lose; Wookiees are known to do that”, resulting in an astute “I see your point sir, I suggest a new strategy, R2; let the Wookiee Win!” from C3PO. Classic! And yes — I made Kev reverse and play that scene at least five times so I could make sure I got all of the dialogue correct! =P
Anyway!
The Qosmio F755 is said to deliver a 3D viewpoint without the need for special glasses, and that might just be the closest we’ve yet come to a similar hologram experience. Granted it will be on the vertical screen and not on a horizontal table, but those are minor details!
To achieve a 3D viewpoint without the aid of special glasses, the new Qosmio F755 3D laptop uses the latest in auto-stereoscopic display technology. Equipped with a brilliant 15.6-inch diagonal full HD TruBrite® display with Active Lens technology, the double parallax image display is able to project two sets of images at the same time, splitting them between the left and right eyes to create the 3D effect. Toshiba’s intuitive Face Tracking technology then taps into the laptop’s built-in webcam to further perfect the projection of the image by reacting to the motion and position of the viewer, delivering a broad viewing zone from which to view 3D content. The end result for consumers is the ability to view and enjoy real 3D – no glasses needed.
If the Qosmio F755 works as advertised, and if George Lucas should release a game of Dejarik for this laptop, I can think of plenty of Star Wars fans who might be willing to cough up the $1700 … =)
