The annual SEMA Show always has some wild and extravagant cars on display. Most come from aftermarket companies, as they should, but more and more manufacturers are using the show to showcase their own skills at creating exciting concept cars.
Among the import nameplates, Hyundai has had some of the most spectacular cars on display the past few years. Most of them have been created by aftermarket tuner companies.
However, this special edition prototype Genesis Coupe, called the Genesis Hurricane SC, is different as it is the result of two years of work by engineers at the Hyundai America Technical Center (HATCI). They teamed up with Magnuson Products, Rhys Millen Racing, Harman International and Torvec Inc. to develop and build the Genesis Hurricane SC.
The engineers worked to enhance all aspects of the vehicle including power, traction, braking, exterior and interior design as well as the audio system. Magnuson Products developed a supercharger for the Genesis Coupe’s 3.8L V-6 engine with a liquid to air intercooler, which produces more than 450 horsepower.
“The HATCI and Magnuson supercharger demonstrates the high-performance potential of Genesis Coupe’s V-6 engine – the car was engineered to handle this kind of extra power,” said David Dutko, senior engineer, HATCI. “Our HATCI engineers have been working for years with Magnuson to ensure high engine output is available on future Hyundai vehicles.”
Torvec has been developing its IsoTorque differential for improved handling and traction capability alongside HATCI engineers at the Hyundai Proving Grounds in California. According to Hyundai, the IsoTorque differential delivers nearly a one second per lap improvement in the Genesis Coupe on the Hyundai road course.
Rhys Millen Racing (RMR), who has a long history of working with Hyundai, provided exterior enhancements including a front bumper, grille, hood, side skirts, diffuser and rear deck with spoiler. RMR partnered with Enkei and Hankook, who provided the high performance 19-inch wheel and tire assemblies. The vehicle also sports upgraded LED headlights and taillights provided by FlyRyde.
HATCI, Hyundai’s design, technology and engineering branch, will display the high-performance Genesis Hurricane SC in Hyundai’s 2011 SEMA Show booth in Las Vegas at the beginning of next month.
