Renault Twingo R2 Evo

Renault Twingo R2 Evo:

Leave it to the French to design a prêt-à-porter rally car available in only one size, extra small.

The Renault R2 Evo is aimed at racing drivers who have the skill, but perhaps not the unlimited budget, to fling this petite front-wheel-drive hatchback along the narrowest dirt and gravel roads.

We’re guessing it’ll do fine on asphalt too.

Renault says the Twingo R2 Evo has been designed “for all markets.” That almost certainly refers to markets where the standard Twingo is sold – most notably Europe. This is version 2.0 of the Twingo rally car, a higher spec than the upcoming R2, and Renault appears to have left no stone unturned when it comes to upping power and performance.

The naturally aspirated 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine pumps out an impressive 190-bhp and maximum torque just above 132 lb.-ft. Renault has “overhauled and resized” the brake system to cope with the more powerful engine.

Like other cars in its class, including the Ford Fiesta R2 and Skoda Fabia R2, the Twingo has rally-car features like a welded roll-cage, stripped out interior, and sequential shift transmission. The Twingo R2 Evo’s suspension includes front and rear-end ball joints combined with Ohlïns hydraulic stop-cup shock absorbers.

More details will come to light once the car receives competition approval, due in early March 2012. Don’t look for Renault to start exporting Twingo rally cars to the U.S. anytime soon. Yet it’s worth noting the Twingo is based on the same platform found in the Nissan Versa and Juke crossover. The Nissan Juke R2 Evo has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?
