Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV: The Oldest Porsche 911 Race Car

When Jack Ryan bought a very early Porsche 911 he decided to race it in the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona. Brumos Porsche, which is now legendary for its Porsche race cars, was his dealer and did the prep on the 911. Problem was that Porsche didn’t want the car raced and when he got to Daytona, Ryan incurred the anger of Huschke von Hanstein, who headed Porsche’s PR and racing efforts. The German automaker figured the car was too new and untested to race, especially in a round-the-clock event. Ryan ignored them, saying, “It’s my car now and I’m entering it.” Sure enough, by half way through the event he and his two-driver team were leading their class. Now Porsche’s attitude changed and Ryan was offered any help the factory team could provide. They soldiered on to win their class, the first win by a 911 anywhere in the world.
