2012 BMW 3 Series Sedan Makes Its Debut in Munich

The BMW 3 Series reaches its 6th generation as the enthusiasts’ exemplary sports sedan with subtle evolutionof the company’s styling cues, moderate increases in dimensions all around, a new 4-cylinder engine choice, an 8-speed automatic option, a coming ActiveHybrid model and a gaggle of trim and equipment variants. Taken in total, they add up to the 2012 BMW 3 Series setting a new benchmark in its class.

Most apparent is this Bavarian’s new front fascia, its elongated headlights and traditional BMW twin-kidney grille now a more unified element. LED accents contribute eyebrows to the headlight surrounds. The previous car’s central air intake is swapped for a pair of them, larger and emphasizing the wide stance of the new 3 Series. BMW terms those small vertical intakes on the far left and right of the main ducts part of its “Air Curtain” technology, the idea being to improve ai flow around the front wheel wells. Efficacy of the overall shape is confirmed by its coefficient of drag, a claimed 0.26 and among the lowest of production automobiles. One contributor to this is the car’s optimization of underside airflow: There are streamlined panels at the sides, under the engine compartment and at the forward portion of the exhaust-system tunnel, together with additional covers generating a diffuser effect at the rear.

In side profile, a recurring 3 Series wedge is even more pronounced than in the previous version. Taut surfaces are accented by a double character line accenting the car’s flanks. The new 3 Series also retains a characteristically BMW “Hofmeister kink” at the base of the car’s C-pillar. Nearby, a fine contour line from the roof pillars gives the roof a lighter, lower appearance. In all, the exterior design is fresh, but still clearly discernable as a BMW—and a 3 Series.
