One of the fascinating things about watching the Porsche races at Rennsport is the variety of cars. It falls to Ferdinand Piëch, of course, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche and the man who now controls Volkswagen and all its brands.
When he first had charge over Porsche, the company was famous for its 2.0-liter race cars, an important class in Europe. Porsche’s mid-1960s 904 is an excellent example of this intent through 4-, 6- and 8-cylinder engines.
Not content to see the automaker loll in a lesser class, Piëch pushed to the larger displacement and by 1969 Porsche was racing the no-holds-barred, world-beating 917.
No more sitting back in the minor leagues…a philosophy Piëch has continued to today and this is also reflected in his goals for everything VW now controls, including Porsche.
